Dr. Katarina Le Blanc, MD, PhD

Professor of Clinical Stem Cell Research, Karolinska Institutet

Katarina Le Blanc is a Professor of Clinical Stem Cell Research at the Karolinska Institutet. She obtained her M.D. from the Karolinska Institutet in 1993 and completed her Ph.D. in 1999, also from the Karolinska Institutet. In 2002, she achieved certification as a specialist in hematology.

Dr. Le Blanc's primary research focuses on mesenchymal stem cells, haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and immunology. She holds membership in various international and national committees, notably including the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet and The Royal Swedish Academy of Science. Furthermore, she serves as an Ordinary Member of the Pontifical Academy of Life in Vatican City State, Rome, Italy. Dr. Le Blanc actively participates in advisory boards and has organized numerous national and international scientific meetings, as well as contributed to multiple program committees.

Throughout her career, she has mentored numerous trainees, PhD students, and postdocs. Katarina has an extensive publication record, boasting over 150 peer-reviewed publications and review articles. Her research has been cited over 30,000 times, and she has delivered approximately 200 presentations at various national and international meetings over the past 15 years. Her outstanding contributions have earned her several awards, including the Knut & Alice Wallenberg Foundation award for young female researchers, the Swedish Medical Society award for young scientists, and the Tobias Foundation Prize for the exceptional studies of the immunological properties of mesenchymal stem cells and their application in mesenchymal stem cell therapy, awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Science.
